“I want to reimagine what the cultural trajectory of my ancestors would look like but most importantly how it would feel. How would it feel to live in a skin firmly rooted in my Mexican identity unadulterated by assimilation into oppressive Anglo- American society? To achieve this, I must begin by peeling away at the deepest and hardened layer of myself. The reimagination of my cultural self is a responsibility owed to my parents, grandparents and to future generations. A duty that entails a life’s work towards undoing assimilations effects and rewiring the inherent Mexican values that have been held hostage and galvanized for centuries.”
